The Creative Way coverRick Rubin is a legendary music producer. Over the years he’s worked with Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Metallica, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, and the list goes on. His creativity has a knack for transcending genre and helping artists to find their authentic voice.

The Creative Act is his reflection on creativity. Who wouldn’t want to hear any advice the legend has to offer? To be honest, I was turned off at the start by flaky language about the universe as a source of inspiration, but I persevered. And I’m glad that I did.

Rubin’s advice is pithy, bordering on Yoda-esque at times, but it resonates. I’m no great creative, but I’ve created enough to recognize the truth when I see it.

Perfectionism gets in the way of fun. (78)

Even spontaneity gets better with practice. (301)

Take art seriously without going about it in a serious way. (354)

The short chapters in this book are filled with simple sentences that tell the truth about what seems like an opaque and mystical process.

Although Rubin’s roots are in music, this book is focused more broadly. If you create, The Creative Act is worth your time.
