Advent launches the church year with anticipation. The Messiah’s arrival is nigh! I find that following a daily devotional during this season is particularity meaningful. As end-of-semester busyness and Christmas planning crowds in, it’s helpful to take daily time to focus. This year I journeyed through Advent with Walter Brueggemann.
If you’ve read Brueggemann, you’ll know what to expect. Always the prophetic voice, he calls people to imagine the new world breaking in and how it challenges the worn-out idolatries of everyday life in late-modern capitalist society.
I was slightly discouraged see Brueggemann use the historically inaccurate idea of an innkeeper and a detached stable, but this was a minor concern. The brief devotional thoughts and well crafted prayers from complier Richard Floyd make this devotional an excellent companion for the Advent.
