Memories of Ice coverMemories of Ice. Omtose Phellack. The Jaghut Warren.

In book three of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, we return to Genabackis to check in with with our old friends from Gardens of the Moon after the Jaghut Tyrant had been dealt with. Wiskeyjack, Ganoes Paran, and the mystery who is Silverfox center the plot in fascinating ways. Other connections are intriguing as well—this book takes place simultaneously with events on Seven Cities narrated in Deadhouse Gates.

Now, three books in, it’s clear that the connections are what makes this series so compelling. Everything is connected. Minor details from one book turn out to be world-changing events two books later. This book also features the first serious look at the Crippled God—the name of book ten if you’re looking ahead. Everything matters.

Memories of Ice is as full and rich a novel as you’ve come to expect from Steven Erickson. Morality is as confused as ever and war is unrelenting in its brutality. More importantly, the apocalyptic air of the series is beginning to stir.
