The kingdom of God was central to the message of Jesus. He launched his public ministry by saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near” (Mark 1:15).  In the confusing aftermath of his death and resurrection, he spent forty days “speaking about the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3).

You might ask yourself, “What was so special about the kingdom of God that Jesus spent so much time talking about it?” Or, depending on your church, “If this theme was so important to Jesus, why is it not given much attention in the church today?”

Fortunately, Jesus’ followers took the time to recite and record what Jesus had to say about the kingdom. The gospels contain many parables that begin with the words, “the kingdom of God is like . . .” The messages in this series look at six short stories Jesus told about the kingdom.

  1. The Parable of the Treasure (Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43)
  2. The Parable of the Farmer Scattering Seed (Mark 4:26–29)
  3. The Parable of the Mustard Seed (Matthew 13:31–32)
  4. The Parable of the Yeast (Matthew 13:33)
  5. The Parable of the Treasure (Matthew 13:44)
  6. The Parable of the Pearl (Matthew 13:44–46)
