Here’s another one from that brilliant scientist (in The Pleasure of Finding Things Out):

I believe that a scientist looking at nonscientific problems is just as dumb as the next guy—and when he talks about a nonscientific matter, he will sound as naive as anyone untrained in the matter.

When I read that last night (in the bathtub, where I do all my best reading), I immediately thought of the implications for my field. Why do some pastors preach and act like they know everything about everything? I know what I’m trained in, and it’s not science, psychology, or sociology (to name a few)! While those fields certainly have a role to play in pastoral ministry, I’ll form my views from the people trained in those areas.

I’ve got a hunch that what we think is spirit-led imputation of knowledge is often little more than intuition based on media consumption.
