This year I’ve been trying memorize some of the Psalms. I’ve been amazed by the depth of meaning that surfaces once they’re committed to memory. Psalm 103 is one of those Psalms. Our church spent four Sundays delving the riches of the famous call to, “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”

This spring I went on a ten day canoe trip through the centre of Algonquin Park. During the trip I had a lot of time to reflect and pray. (Seriously, try ten days with no emails to reply to, no websites to check on, no phone messages to return, and no television to distract you!)

Through the season of Lent, we considered five of the parables Jesus shared during that final week in Jerusalem. This is Jesus at his let-it-all-hang-out best. Gone are the days when he told people to keep quiet about being healed. These parables from Matthew are Jesus’ final and most direct words to his friends as well as his killers.

If you’re curious, most of my help came from two sources:

  1. Matthew 21-28: A Commentary (Hermeneia) by Ulrich Luz
  2. Stories with Intent: A Comprehensive Guide to the Parables of Jesus by Klyne Snodgrass

I highly recommend both of these resources.

Throughout the last few months of 2010, I felt the need to speak about Christian Character, or (as it’s traditionally been called) Virtue. Thus this series entitled, Heart-Work.
What does it mean to grow up as believers? If we are saved by faith alone, why bother renovating our character? How does my life now relate to eternal life in the new heavens and new earth God has planned? Where do I being? How do we work on our character without lapsing into legalism and blind rule-following (or worse, rule-making)? These are the sort of questions we looked at during January and February, 2011.

The major inspiration for this teaching came from an N. T. Wright book, After You Believe: Why Christian Character Matters. If this topic interests you, I would encourage you to pick it up. Isaiah chapter 40 and onward was written while God’s people were in exile in Babylon. Their land was taken, their cities destroyed, their friends and loved ones killed and scattered. Still, the prophets had hope. In fact, they had more hope in exile than they did while they still lived in Jerusalem!

One of those hope-full prophets penned four poems about a “servant” of God who would accomplish some pretty amazing things. While at first glance the servant seems to be Israel in general, the more you read the more it becomes apparent that the prophet is talking about a specific Israelite who would act on Israel’s behalf. Christians have identified this person as Jesus.

As we looked at these four poems during the season of Advent, we considered what they meant about Israel, about Jesus, and even about us: Jesus’ body on earth.

In it, N. T. Wright discusses the need to avoid imperialism and anti-imperialism. Instead, we need to walk along the border between heaven and earth, anticipating the day when the earth will again be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God.
